The Popular Enrique Peña Nieto
The latest darling of Mexico's political scene is the handsome Enrique Peña Nieto. It is safe to say that prevailing opinion holds him the top contender among the candidates. Nieto presents a formidable, nail-biting challenge to the other presidentiables.
The official campaign period for Mexico's 2012 Presidential Elections does not start until April but Peña Nieto's momentum and popularity see no signs of dwindling down. One of Nieto's particular skills is rhetorical delivery, for his gestures and tones are impressively effective whenever he makes a public address. He is said to be a most magnetic politician, with the ability to pull in voters as well as admirers.
Some people say that the man's rise to fame was all due to a contract with the biggest TV network in the country. It is alleged that the network was in cahoots with him to promote his achievements in the past. The television company allegedly depicts a positive political and presidential image for Peña Nieto.
It is worth noting that people only began talking about this supposed deal following Nieto's admission of a relationship with Ms. Rivera of Televisa. The woman happens to be a superstar of Mexican TV. He was married to Rivera three years after the death of his first wife, Monica Pretelini.
From his first marriage, Nieto has three children. It was while Nieto was functioning as a governor for the state of Mexico that his first wife died. After this, the famed governor became Mexico's most eligible bachelor, attracting television cameras and women wherever he went.
There is even more to Nieto than his fame as a desired bachelor (at least, before Rivera), though. Part of his previous gubernatorial campaign was traveling to different parts of the state, asking constituents what public works they need, and pledging to deliver these promises or commitments or what he calls “compromisos”. Infrastructure was just one of the chief notes in his campaign.
When the infrastructure stated in these compromisos were finally erected, Pena Nieto turned into massive social affairs the inauguration of multiple public works projects week after week. This is perhaps one big reason for the man's reputation as a politician who actually keeps campaign promises. Opponents still note that Nieto's expenditures for the promotions of his "completed promises" were far higher than the expenditures for the completion of the promises themselves.
His critics managed to get other fodder for their remarks about him when he made a few gaffes at the Guadalajara Book Fair. It was found then that Nieto could not remember quite a number of important things about the texts he liked best. Nieto's reason was that he preferred to expend more time remembering the body of the book instead of what was on its cover.
His inability to recall such details got a lot of his critics laughing at his expense, though. When one of his daughters was asked about it, she delivered a rather emotional response that may not have been wise. Even now, in spite of all the politician's efforts to stem the critics, they are still making fun of him for his alleged lack of intellectualism.
It is a shame, Enrique Peña Nieto claims, that so much of his speech ends up being taken apart and decontextualized. All the same, Nieto is still the most popular candidate for the presidency. It is said that he is most likely to win due to the voters' liking for him.
